The 5 Copywriting Mistakes Losing You Money

You know how it is, you’re the business owner. You have that fantastic product or service that customers should be falling over themselves to purchase. You’ve got the business plan, you’ve launched your website and now you wait. And wait. And wait. Where are all those customers that you know should be desperate to “add to basket” and “buy now”?

The truth is, you’ve probably turned them off by making some seemingly unnoticeable mistakes in your website copy.

Your ideal customer needs to be sold to in their language. In words they understand. Words that elicit the primal “I’ve got to have that” response. If your website isn’t making your client feel seen, they’ll most likely click back to search results and find someone else who understands them.

Fortunately, you can give your customers exactly what they want by avoiding these 5 common copywriting mistakes on your website.

1.    Stop Alienating Your Reader

Company jargon and big fancy words aren't fun for anyone. Not even for the big fancy company execs who made them up.

Studies show most people read at the same level as an 11-year-old kid.

That means copy with any boring, head-scratching big words will immediately lose the interest of your reader. And lose your sale.

Keep it simple folks.

2.    It’s Not All About You

It's only natural that you want to tell people all about your wonderful brand and why you love it and why it's the best thing ever.

But really, your customers want to hear what's in it for them. Why should they love your brand just as much as you do?

That's where great copy comes into it - speak to your audience and you'll increase brand awareness and loyalty.

3.    Give it Some Emotion

You need to captivate your customer's senses through words. Highlight the benefits your customers are actually interested in.

Option 1: Moisturiser with 3.0% Hyaluronic Acid, Aloe Vera, and Glycerin.

Option 2: An intensely hydrating moisturiser packed with skin plumping ingredients to keep your face radiant, smooth and supple.

Which of those speaks directly to the product's ideal customer?

4.    Snooze-Inducing Paragraphs

You know the feeling of reading through a blog or a website and being bombarded with lengthy paragraphs, chock-full of too much information.

Break it down.

Smaller chunks keep people engaged.

Make your reader actually want to read your stuff.

5.    Forgetting the CTA

Your copy has to clearly guide your reader to the desired next step.

Do they need to sign up to your mailing list? Download a copy of your ebook? Purchase your product?

Direct them to where they need to go or better yet, give them a few options to help them explore your site.
